Freedom of Speech Is a Western Phenomenon

---------- Forwarded message ---------
From: Larry

“You cannot take Christianity out of the West and have anything that’s recognizably the West,” atheist British pundit Douglas Murray has acknowledged. “To live in a Western country is to live in a society still utterly saturated by Christian concepts and assumptions,” says British historian Tom Holland in his popular book Dominion. One of those Christian concepts and assumptions, channeling ideas that draw upon even more ancient Greek and Roman sources, is that people must be free to speak their minds without the threat of arrest or violence. It was an incredibly hard-fought freedom. And it is one many of our elites seem eager to surrender for the sake of inclusivity and tolerance toward Muslims and people who call themselves transgender, among others.

Freedom of Speech Is a Western Phenomenon

Two hundred and 50 years ago, the United States declared its independence based on the proposition that “all men” are endowed by God with the unalienable right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” When, 15 years later, an independent, sovereign nation ratified its Constitution and Bill of Rights, the right to freedom of speech was included in the very First Amendment. Of course, its authors and signers did not think they were innovators in this regard but rather drew upon an ancient Western — and perhaps most singularly, British — tradition that included, per Thomas Jefferson, Aristotle, Cicero, John Locke, and Algernon Sidney, who all recognized the importance of free speech.

The US-China Space Race Has Begun

The claim is that we need to go to the Moon so that we can go to Mars. We don't need to go to Mars. It far too risky and to costly to go to a dead, dangerous planet with a 1/3 of the gravity of the Earth. The radiation on Mars and on the way is too dangerous.

He makes a point about fascism that I agree with. It seems more relevant today than ever.

This animated film is overtly, or maybe covertly, political.

Ironically, Mark Hamill, from Star Wars, does a voice in the film, which was crushed at the box office by Star Wars.

Anti Scott Adams Strip

There is no evidence that Scott Adams was a Nazi. This strip unfairly labels MAGA as racist.

In 2023, Scott Adams responded to a survey in which only 53% of Black people said that it was okay to be White. He called Blacks a "hate group," said that Whites should get away from Blacks, and further said that he wasn't going to try to help Blacks anymore.

His comments were rightfully called racist. He refused to apologize for them. His comments were wrong. He could have given a more thoughtful response to the survey. He could have also been more understanding about the experiences of black people in America.

He defended his comments by saying that he was being hyperbolic.

He followed up by talking publicly with Black influencers about social issues, apparently trying to improve his image.

Scott Adams died on January 13, 2026, from metastatic prostate cancer.

Regardless of his opinions, I enjoyed and still enjoy his comic strip.
