Assassination of Reinhard Heydrich

I just watched a Netflix drama about Operation Anthropoid. A couple of paratroopers assassinated Nazi officer Reinhard Heydrich, who had it coming because he was a bad dude, but they didn't seem to have much regard for the consequences of their actions. Not only were they killed, along with all their collaborators, but what little that remained of the Czechoslovakian resistance was wiped out. Then the Nazis killed 5,000 Czechoslovakians in retaliation.

Was it really so important to kill just one man?
