I think that 'they' as a definite pronoun is grammatically incorrect. I am sure that you are aware of this. People argue that the word 'they' can be singular, as in ...
"If someone wants to attend the fall semester, they must register in August."
But here it is being used as an indefinite pronoun and not a definite one.
